Yale University has retained Helbling, a ZRG company to conduct an executive search to secure a Senior Director, YSM (Yale School of Medicine) / West Campus Development.


Position Summary

Under broad guidelines established by the University and reporting to the Associate Vice President, Capital Program Development and Delivery, the Senior Director, YSM/West Campus Development will oversee the Facilities planning and capital project implementation at the Yale School of Medicine (YSM), West Campus (WC), and the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH). 

The Senior Director will continuously strive to enhance both the quality and quantity of services offered while cultivating a conducive operational environment for attracting and retaining top-tier facilities professionals. Further, they will oversee the processes and outputs of the YSM, WC, and YSPH Facilities Planning and Project Management staff, leveraging extensive knowledge of the school’s programmatic priorities and financial status in alignment with University Office of Facilities practices and policies.

Consistently aiming to enhance service quality and quantity while fostering an environment conducive to recruiting and retaining high-caliber facilities professionals, the Senior Director will collaborate with administration to articulate a facilities vision aligning with the objectives of WC, YSPH, and YSM’s research, clinical, and educational endeavors.

The Senior Director will align the priorities and deliverables of the Facilities Planning and Project Management groups with the administration’s objectives. They will oversee the formulation, design, and execution of capital and non-capital projects in accordance with the University’s established policies and procedures, overseen by its Associate Vice President for Capital Program and Delivery. Additionally, they will cultivate an in-depth understanding of the academic, research, and clinical units within the school and integrate this knowledge into the facilities planning process.

This leader will ensure that planning and management staff meet project scope and RFP requirements, overseeing their management of consultants, including construction managers, to ensure adherence to contracted scopes, commitments, schedules, milestones, and deadlines. Additionally, the Senior Director will produce reports and analyses to support decision-making by the School and University administration.

They will oversee the development, management, and upkeep of databases pertaining to the quantity, condition, and utilization of the West Campus and YSM School’s facility assets. Additionally, the Senior Director will collaborate closely with Budget Offices to establish, document, and maintain financial projections for the ongoing 10-year facilities plan encompassing YSM, YSPH, and West Campus.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead one or more functional areas within a University administrative department, ensuring adherence to University policies and procedures;
  • Oversee analytical and research support for educational policies and planning as well as the development and approval of administrative policies impacting assigned functional areas of the University;
  • Manage and set parameters for major projects within the department and University;
  • Interpret federal policies and regulations, educating staff and administration on regulations, restrictions, and the legal obligations of the University;
  • Direct the implementation of policy and program modifications and establish standards to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations;
  • Develop and administer an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures; 
  • Develop cost-saving objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature;
  • Establish and implement long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives;
  • Direct the development of related automated systems to support the function; determine office policies and procedures for use of automated systems;
  • Direct the evaluation and selection of vendors; negotiate contract details, including work steps and pricing, with vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area;
  • Work with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature;
  • Represent the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies;
  • Manage a workforce consisting of exempt and nonexempt staff;
  • Duties beyond those specified may be assigned.

Requirements

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field;
  • Ten years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Advanced knowledge of architectural planning, design, and construction processes;
  • Advanced level of team building and leadership skills; ability to process multiple assignments, set priorities, and lead project teams to meet objectives.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to make effective presentations to influence change and acceptance with key stakeholders.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and construction scheduling software;
  • Demonstrated business acumen; capacity to achieve results through team leadership, possessing adept analytical and negotiation abilities;
  • Proficiency in technical aspects related to data collection, analysis, and interpretation essential for executive decision-making, encompassing ROI evaluation and feasibility studies.

Preferred Experience

  • Master’s degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field;
  • Registered architect, licensed professional engineer, or degree in Construction Management;
  • Previous involvement in a medical school or similar high-demand setting, coupled with experience in research and laboratory design and construction;
  • LEED certification.
