The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has retained Helbling to conduct an executive search to retain a Director of Engineering Services.


Position Summary 

The Director of Engineering Services will provide management and direction of engineering design services in the FPDC department with a portfolio of projects that ranges from $600M to over $1B annually. Additionally, the Director:
  • Represents FPDC to provide engineering direction on new construction and renovation of existing space at MD Anderson pertaining to research, patient care, vivarium facilities, master planning, and other project types. 
  • Directs the strategic planning of facility renewal in support of operations and maintenance. 
  • Acts as departmental liaison with external professional consultants regarding architectural services, external consulting engineers, and other professional consultants.
  • Assures compliance with applicable building codes and other regulatory requirements governing the provision of engineering design services.

Functions

Operations and Maintenance Support  
  • Develops and implements processes to manage engineering in support of the Operations and Maintenance departments in their effort to manage the institution's assets and environment.
  • Develops and oversees the strategic facility renewal program including facility condition assessments.  
Project Support
  • Develops and implements processes to manage the technical expectations of capital and expense projects; provide consulting and (in-house) professional engineering services for remodeling, renovation, new construction, and equipment replacement projects; and provide engineering technical support for Owner Design Guidelines. 
  • Provides oversight and review of commissioning efforts on capital projects.
Strategic Engineering Direction  
  • Provides strategic engineering direction in support of the Long-Term Capital Plan on conceptual site utilization studies and plans for proposed new buildings. 
  • Forecasts future utility growth needs in support of the LTCP.  
  • Oversees the campuswide utility master plan.  
  • Oversees the implementation of the energy initiatives in support of the energy strategic plan.

Facilities Planning, Design and Construction Department
The Facilities Planning, Design and Construction (FPDC) department manages funds and projects designated by The University of Texas System for improvements to MD Anderson Cancer Center’s 16 million square feet of facilities. FPDC provides architectural and engineering services, space standards and planning, and interior specifications for their projects. FPDC also handles the creation of long-term development plans for the institution and for specific division within MD Anderson.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Ten plus years of engineering experience to include experience in the healthcare, higher education, energy, engineering firm, research design, or regulated industry; fifteen years of engineering experience is preferred. 
  • Seven years of leadership experience required (managing managers).
  • Member of teams in a leadership capacity involved in a project portfolio that ranges from $500M to over $1B.  
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure.
