Helbling is representing UPMC Pinnacle, a prominent healthcare system, in conducting an executive search to secure a Project Manager, Construction.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the System Director of Construction Management and Facilities Maintenance, the Project Manager is responsible for assisting in planning; design; development of scope; and coordination, supervision, and management of construction and renovations projects for the healthcare system. The Project Manager is also responsible for quality control, adherence to institutional and industry standards, budget requirements, and compliance with applicable regulatory agencies.

The ideal Project Manager candidate will possess a balance of technical and interpersonal skills to manage the execution of challenging construction projects while maintaining the highest level of customer service to internal users and stakeholders. The system has more than $500M worth of planned and active construction projects with additional investment looming, and the Project Manager will play a key role in the success of their ongoing capital program. The Project Manager will have ample autonomy and need to be self-driven, but the ideal candidate will also be a team player who will work closely with peer staff within the construction team while also collaborating with operations / maintenance and the broader team within Facilities Management. The System Director of Construction Management and Facilities Maintenance aims to instill the core values of communication, transparency, problem-solving, and hard work within his team and aims to build a challenging and tight-knit environment.

Position will be based in Harrisburg, PA with select travel to hospital and outpatient locations in Central Pennsylvania.

    • Ability to move projects or initatives forward in a fast-paced environment. At times, also the ability to move things forward with limited information.  
  • Interpersonal Finesse.
    • Ability to diagnose situations, people, and personalities, and respond appropriately. Knows how to influence people to a win-win decision, at times with resistance or differing views.  
  • Technicallly Competent.
    • Know the processes, procedures, and tools to be a successful Project Manager. Be willing to learn new technical competencies unique to healthcare and/or the institution. 
  • Analyze and Decide 
    • Ability to quickly breakdown and understand problems and react appropriately. Know when a quick decision is required and when to step back for deeper analysis.
  • Steady and Even-keeled
    • Avoid getting too high or too low. With many projects ongoing at a given time and new problems arising daily, the Project Manager will need to be steady and calm in the face of pressures.  


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Construction, Architecture, or other related field or equivalent experience.
  • Five (5) plus years of experience in healthcare construction is ideal, but our client is open to training strong Project Managers without existing healthcare experience. 
  • Understanding of all aspects of design and construction.  
  • Ability to manage large volumes of complex work simultaneously. 
  • Computer skills. 
  • Ability to read scientific and technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and legal documents. 
  • Ability to prepare business letters, proposals, summaries, and reports using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to conduct training, communicate at panel discussions, and make presentations with poise and control.  
  • Very strong overall quantitative skills and reasoning with the ability to turn data into useful information that informs decision-making.
