Helbling is representing a Pittsburgh-based geotechnical construction and equipment rental company in conducting an executive search to secure a Geotechnical Project Manager. Our client was founded nearly 40 years ago and works in multiple states in the Midwest. Its work includes: Compaction Grouting, Drilling & Grouting, Flowable Fills, Micropiles, Mine Fire Mitigation, Retaining Walls, Shotcrete, Soil and Rocks Anchors, Soil Mixing, Soil Nails, and Temporary and Permanent Tieback Anchors.  Seeking a full-time Geotechnical Project Manager for its Pittsburgh headquarters. This role could also be based in the Cleveland or St. Louis offices.


  • Serving as Project Manager for all aspects of geotechnical construction, including: estimating, contract negotiations, CPM scheduling, cost control, QA/QC plan implementation, executing work, and project document controls.
  • Some design responsibilities may be necessary.
  • Day to day management of projects.
  • Writing proposals.
  • Developing and managing project schedules.
  • Change orders and claim notices.
  • Performing on-site inspections for QA/QC compliance and project execution.
  • Interacting with field supervision, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Trouble-shooting issues that develop.
  • Project invoicing.
  • B.S.  or M.S. Degree in Civil Engineering required, with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
  • Licensure: Professional Engineer preferred, but not required. Must be willing to seek licensing, if requested.
  • Ten plus (10+) years of geotechnical engineering or construction experience required.
  • Ability to execute technical aspects of a wide range of projects including highway, power, heavy industrial, commercial, and retail projects.
  • Working knowledge of micropiles, temporary or permanent tieback anchors, soil nails, shotcrete, ground improvement, and slope stability is preferred.
  • Familiarity with design/build project delivery is preferred.
  • Some experience with business development and marketing.
  • Willingness to grow the company’s geotechnical services.
  • Knowledge of different drilling methods, drill tooling, and equipment selection to meet differing ground conditions 
  • Occasional travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-West regions. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proven track record of delivering projects on time and budget.
  • Must have proficient verbal and written communication skills, a strong work ethic, and possess the ability to work as a team player.
