Helbling has been retained by a university in Louisiana to secure a Director of Facilities Services (Director) to help sophisticate and create a vision for the future within the facilities department. The Director will have complete oversight and budget responsibility for the operational control, maintenance, and repair of the central plant, facilities, custodial, campus fleet, and equipment along with campus grounds maintenance. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs, the Director oversees two Assistant Directors (Custodial & Grounds and Plant & Maintenance), as well as 40 supporting staff. Campus consists of 249 acres and approximately 700,000 SF of building space.

The Director will be a team player, but have the autonomy to lead and drive change within the Facilities department and its culture. This individual will play an integral part in the campus master plan, as well as creating an operational plan and annual budget for the immediate future of the department. The Director will have direct communication laterally with key stakeholders and peer directors to cultivate relationships across the campus

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Schedule and supervise the cleaning, maintenance, alterations, and repairs of campus facilities by University personnel as well as outside contractors.
  • Collaborate with campus leadership on the University’s short-term and long-term facilities plan and construction / maintenance budget issues.
  • Prepare and manage the annual facilities department budget for the operation of facilities maintenance.
  • Maintain the vehicle fleet in accordance with state and system guidelines.
  • Create request for proposals and negotiate contracts with outside vendors.
  • Coordinate departmental operations with other University departments, key stakeholders, and outside organizations.
  • Recommend and develop department policies and procedures.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and motivate approximately 40 employees in the department.
  • Develop or participate in writing specifications for equipment, systems, or services.
  • Occasional on-call and weekend work necessary to meet demands of campus maintenance
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a facilities management environment or closely related area. 
  • Supervisory experience in a facilities management environment.
  • Capability to grasp the bigger picture while also focusing on the immediate goals and needs of the campus.
  • Knowledge and experience with state maintenance, construction, and procurement procedures.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills to develop a cohesive team environment.
  • Ability to analyze and react to situations in a problem solving capacity.
  • Desire to contribute and leave a lasting mark on the University campus.
